The 1979 Don Bosco, Gilbertville squad and Coach Dan Mashek were chosen to lead the 336 medal winners in the 2009 Iowa High School Championship Grand March. This team won the Class 1A title that year an achievement that has a unique highlight. The Dons qualified for the state each of their 12 varsity wrestlers, a task so difficult that it stands alone in the 89 years of the tournament. Moreover, that squad, in winning the school’s first state title, cruised past the field rolling up 145.5 points -- the most ever scored by any team at the time and it remained a Class 1A record until 1990. The Dons’ winning margin of 99.5 points is still the largest ever in the history of the meet. In fact Don Bosco’s total was more than the teams that finished second thru fourth combined!
